EngAging Illinois Community Roadmap: Implementing the Multisector Plan for Aging at the Local Level

Ready to bring EngAging Illinois to your town, city, or community?

If you’re a local government official, an aging or disability advocate, or are with an aging service provider, nonprofit, community or faith organization, or academic institution, and want to see EngAging Illinois come to life in your area, this guide is for you!

You’ve heard about the Illinois Multisector Plan for Aging, read some or all of the Plan, and are eager for your city, town, community, or neighborhood to be a part of this exciting initiative.  Now what?

Everyone can do this!

The EngAging Illinois Community Roadmap is designed to support the efforts of local governments, community organizations, businesses, and individuals to make their part of Illinois a great place to grow up and grow older for everyone. The guide suggests seven key steps for planning and starting local initiatives, along with links to helpful resources and inspiration, which will be updated periodically.  It also includes examples from across the state and questions to consider as you work through the planning process.

Throughout this process, planners should be sure to consult with people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to ensure your project reflects the full diversity of your community. It can also be helpful to identify people in your community who can serve as ambassadors for your plan, to help spread the word about it and engage new partners along the way.

At the end of this guide you’ll find a worksheet that can be printed and used to reflect and take notes on the various stages of the planning process.

Age-Friendly or age-friendly

It’s easy to be confused! “Age-Friendly” is a formal designation by a variety of organizations. We use “age-friendly” to refer to the broader goal of recognizing the opportunities and challenges for all of us as we age and creating communities that are good for growing up AND growing old.

Let us know how you’re bringing EngAging Illinois to your community and inspire others across the state
